Two Mississippi police officers were shot and killed while responding to a call at a motel early Wednesday.
The shooting happened shortly before 4:30 a.m. as Bay St. Louis police responded to a call at a Motel 6, CBS News reports. Two officers encountered a woman, who opened fire at them before killing herself.
One officer died at the scene. Another officer was rushed to the hospital, where he died later Wednesday.
Police Chief Tody Schwartz told WWL-TV that the two slain officers were Sgt. Steven Robin and Officer Branden Estorffe. The suspect's identity also has not been released.
"(The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation) is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence," the agency said in a statement. "Additional information may be made public at a later time."
"I am heartbroken by this terrible loss of two brave law enforcement officers" Gov. Tate Reeves wrote in a statement posted on social media. "I am praying for their family, friends, their fellow officers, and the entire Bay St. Louis community. Every single day across Mississippi, our law enforcement members place their lives on the line in constant and repeated acts of selfless sacrifice for their community."
